Long Shao Hong

The author covers how Elon’s childhood impacted his personality and behaviour。 Elon’s addiction to risk and his demon side of personality might drive people crazy but that pushes humanity forward。 A friendly and normal guy won’t launch rockets into orbit and drive the transition to electric vehicles。

i basically read this book in 2 days。 i wish i found the same zeal in reading for other books but i be a sucker for biographies and in this case since i am a teenager i have been interested in what elon was doing first in his products then in his person。 well i also admire walter isaacson as a biographer, previously i read his steve jobs biography and i was impressed but as with the former this book too had parts were i found less interesting not because of the material but because i want partic i basically read this book in 2 days。 i wish i found the same zeal in reading for other books but i be a sucker for biographies and in this case since i am a teenager i have been interested in what elon was doing first in his products then in his person。 well i also admire walter isaacson as a biographer, previously i read his steve jobs biography and i was impressed but as with the former this book too had parts were i found less interesting not because of the material but because i want particularly interested in that product of period in this case the twitter days。 but also i think walter focused too much on the product while not giving alot of space to his personality and relationships during the last quarter of the book。 but still elon is a loopy character and there isnt much to discover about him yet his story his exciting and his behaivor is predictable。 i gave it a 5 stars i say it because well i finished it in 2 days, either i have a boring as duck life so i have to finish it in two days or its a quite entertaining book and the truth is in the middle of both, well i am happy to read another book, which will be written for the end of his life and i am looking forward to reading it and i hope to work at SpaceX or Neuralink in the future as a psychologist, i have plans and it perfectly fits with my living in a foreign country agenda 。。。more

Elon Musk is a fascinating man。 And, love him or hate him, the world we live in today wouldn't be what it is without him, especially where we are with electric vehicles。 Elon Musk is a fascinating man。 And, love him or hate him, the world we live in today wouldn't be what it is without him, especially where we are with electric vehicles。 。。。more

Takes a little bit to get going but then becomes quite compelling。 Much of the book is focused on the last two years, when Isaacson shadowed Musk directly – this means that there’s less focus on his earlier background than I’d like, but does result in a very high-fidelity telling of some of the most recent events (Twitter acquisition in particular)。As someone that generally has a positive view of Elon but doesn’t follow what he does very closely, I found that the book overall improved my percept Takes a little bit to get going but then becomes quite compelling。 Much of the book is focused on the last two years, when Isaacson shadowed Musk directly – this means that there’s less focus on his earlier background than I’d like, but does result in a very high-fidelity telling of some of the most recent events (Twitter acquisition in particular)。As someone that generally has a positive view of Elon but doesn’t follow what he does very closely, I found that the book overall improved my perception of him。 It’s unclear if this is because Isaacson was not critical enough of Musk (as many online have accused him of), or if in general Musk is simply bad at personal PR and he’s really a mostly non-insane dude that sometimes Tweets crazy stuff。For those interested in Musk and how he runs his companies, I’d recommend reading sooner rather than later due to book’s recency bias。 Probably wouldn’t recommend otherwise, especially so if you’re already anti-Musk。 。。。more

This book goes into his craziness, and the descriptions likely even temper it! It does make me feel he has human interests at heart even though his behavior does not! As Walter Isaacson questions, though, could he be as successful as he is, without it?

[Two reasons you should read this book]Isaacson laid it out all too early — right there, in Chapter One; that Elon Musk is a cocktail mixing some very, very long-tail traits, shaped both by his unusual upbringing and risk taking genes passed down through the bloodlines, follows a textbook script of nature and nurture。 That would have made the book predictable, perhaps even boring。When unfolding, such characters are bound to blaze highly unpredictable trails or, in a different and unkind time, re [Two reasons you should read this book]Isaacson laid it out all too early — right there, in Chapter One; that Elon Musk is a cocktail mixing some very, very long-tail traits, shaped both by his unusual upbringing and risk taking genes passed down through the bloodlines, follows a textbook script of nature and nurture。 That would have made the book predictable, perhaps even boring。When unfolding, such characters are bound to blaze highly unpredictable trails or, in a different and unkind time, remove themselves from the world stage too early (because of their own reckless acts, like Elon’s maternal-side of grandfather)。 As I watch Elon zigzagging through the pages like a mad particle, I was struck by awe and pain, all the while being reminded that Chapter One has “told you so。”That is why I felt the reading is not boring, but unfun and at times shallow。 After a while, all the drama feels old。What Elon Musk did is outrageous。 He breaks things。 He did so with such violence that what he touches shatters into pieces。 Then the pieces whirl around him and manage to re-integrate。 He is, as Bill Gates put it, the single man in our time who brought so much new innovations to the world, however you despise (or even hate) him。 Coming from Bill, this is a mighty complement。I am familiar with his algorithm: question all the rules, delete exhaustively (till you have to add 10% back), fail fast and automate later。 This is how good science is done; it is precisely Einstein’s version of “KISS” (“Keep it Simple, but not Simpler”)。 But I never thought this can be carried out outside the domain of science so forcefully。 Most of us are keyboard worriers, after all。This is the second reason why you should read this book, because it is not easy and perhaps even impossible to imagine。And the first reason? It is about why and where he miserably failed。 This is the saga of Twitter。 Twitter is a product of people, not of cars, rockets, software, brain chips and so on。 People are far more complex and messy, there is no single mega algorithm, no law of physics to come as a rescue。 Twitter survives if Elon quits。 But will he? The saga of Twitter (or X, as it is now called) says as much about the world of human as it is about Elon。 If Twitter dies, in fact if any of those great products Elon made disappear, it doesn’t matter。 Elon has made his imprints, and Mars will greet him first, indeed。 But this has always been a very strange notion to me: if we screw up living on earth, what chance do we have on Mars? 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Elon’s journey。 Remarkable feat’s in a few decades。 “Advancement requires human agency” so LFG!

The access that Isaacson was given in the number of interviews conducted mean this biography felt very useful in understanding the inner workings behind the headlines about Musk。 The question I kept coming back to was the whether technical progress is worth leaving a string of destroyed people, companies, and products in your week。 And for me, the answer to that question is an easy no, but it certainly seems the opposite for Musk。

Intriguing and inspiring story of the man who has done more to push the bounds of science and innovation than anyone else in history。

honest, no faff - easy to read。

A very well-written book about a fascinating, brilliant, and maddening person。 Musk is painted as a visionary, driven (an understatement), and effective entrepreneur who succeeded time and again with wild ideas - until Twitter。 Then he made bad decisions galore, did things with predictably bad outcomes, and was even more terrible with people than his terrible baseline。 All in all though, Musk really is visionary to a world class level and has good motives for what he chooses to do。 Walter Isaacs A very well-written book about a fascinating, brilliant, and maddening person。 Musk is painted as a visionary, driven (an understatement), and effective entrepreneur who succeeded time and again with wild ideas - until Twitter。 Then he made bad decisions galore, did things with predictably bad outcomes, and was even more terrible with people than his terrible baseline。 All in all though, Musk really is visionary to a world class level and has good motives for what he chooses to do。 Walter Isaacson tells the story beautifully。 。。。more

I’d seen interviews with Isaacson in which he’d seemed troublingly deferential to Musk so I was worried that this book would be an ass-kissing hagiography, but it isn’t。 It portrays Musk as a dangerously unstable person。 At the end there is some silly speculation about whether his issues are worth having in exchange for what he’s accomplished, but that view is pretty hard to square with the numerous instances of absurd, abusive, and destructive behaviour described throughout the book。

Love him or hate him, read this book。 I couldn’t put it down。 Elon is fascinating, and this author captures him in the most brilliant, authentic ways。

Extremely well researched and well written, although very long and a little tedious at times。

Brilliant, albeit a dense read。

Scott Cedotal

Musk is a brilliant but restless and mostly unhappy。 Isaacson delivers again。

Michael

Walter Isaacson is truly a master biographer。 Wonderfully written about a complex man。

Love him or hate him , Elon Musk is a fascinating person and this well written book takes us through his entire life through 2023 , helping show us what drives him, why he is the way he is, the ins and outs of his private and personal life, all he has accomplished and at what cost。

“Chill and normal dude。”

I found this book fascinating。 I learned a lot about Elon Musk - some of it made me like him more and other parts made me like him less。 I think it’s very well written giving a fair representation of who he is - the good and the bad。 Would recommend whether you like musk or not - he’s done some quite impressive things。

Great book by Walter Isaacson, as usual, Elon is an interesting person and Isaacson captures the many faces and moods of Elon。 Walter best sums up the persona of Elon thusly : “… would a restrained Musk accomplish as much as a Musk unbound? I listened to this book on Audible-not sure I could have made it through if it were in print。 I’m not a techie, but I became interested in Musk when he took on the SJWs out there in the world of social media。 I honestly didn’t realize how much innovation he has his hands in - and what a force he has become in the world。 I won’t really comment too much on his life because he will have to live with the choices he’s made。 I find it very hard to believe he can have-IDK, 10-15 kids—I completely lost I listened to this book on Audible-not sure I could have made it through if it were in print。 I’m not a techie, but I became interested in Musk when he took on the SJWs out there in the world of social media。 I honestly didn’t realize how much innovation he has his hands in - and what a force he has become in the world。 I won’t really comment too much on his life because he will have to live with the choices he’s made。 I find it very hard to believe he can have-IDK, 10-15 kids—I completely lost track-but how can you possibly work that many hours, fly all over the world, play video games for hours, etc and still be a great dad-like he is portrayed to be?? Was looking forward to reading this after having enjoyed other Isaac son’s biographies。 Learnt very few things which are not publicly information already。 Would have liked it if the author had spent more time on Elon childhood。 Too much time on the drama from 2020-2023。

It seems everyone has an opinion on whether they “like” Musk - most don’t。 But i often wonder how such judgements are made - is it because of a specific comment or action?
